Hey guys and gals,

It's been a busy last couple of weeks (for a reason) and I won't lie I've been frustrated a whole bunch and have felt like giving up.

I know, we've all felt like it at times. You put in the time, you put in the effort, you are doing the work both physically and mentally yet you still come up empty handed (or so we erroneously think).

And even though I know the rules of engagement, I am human and I still get frustrated and want to throw in the towel.

Today's podcast is about not giving up. I know it will help.

While there is a lot of negative crap going on in the world right now I'm going to focus on the positive things.

The things I can control.

And that's part of my advice in today's podcast. I also talk about how we quit every day without really thinking that it will hurt our performances over the long haul. In fact, we don't even consider it quitting but it is.

This is not being a downer. This is creating awareness and from there we have a conscious choice to change and thus make big improvements.

Today Charlotte and I talk about the ideology of hacks that make us believe there is some form of shortcut towards the outcomes we want.

We also cover the uncertainty that many athletes are going through in their training for races right now. And the ultimate question. Is it worth it when we don't know if the race will happen?

Today we talk about setting and getting goals. We use a different framework than the typical SMART goals process.

Regardless of the system. We need to set them to get them. Goals that are set with commitment give us focus. As we speak about, your goals don't need to be for races just to train but we need goals and need to focus on whats the next step.

Goals and focus right now are really important to our mental health as well as our physical health.

Every single one of us is going to face challenges both big and small and even seemingly insurmountable.

And there are going to be a myriad of challenges you’re going to have to overcome in order to get anywhere near your ‘life’ potential.

There will be sacrifice challenges, there will be injury and health challenges, there will be life circumstance challenges, there will be motivational challenges, there will be many a mental challenge and the list will go on and on.

The challenges we are all facing right now can seem overwhelming.

The problem is that we’re probably the only organism on earth that truly seeks comfort. We prefer to look for ‘outs’ from the daily struggle instead of embracing it.

We need to lean into the struggles. Embrace them, learn from them and move through them.

If we look to nature – it’s glaringly obvious that life is not easy at all.

Life is HARD and that’s ok.

Nature can give us some great lessons. Today is a short podcast on what we can learn from ANTS.

We need to stop buying into complexity is the way. We see way too many people undervaluing simplicity.

Simple doesn’t make it easy.

But keeping things simple is the pathway to getting really good at endurance sports.

Today Charlotte and I give you the main simple and required things you must do if you care about improving. If you care about seeing what you can do.

The hard thing with simple. It gets rid of a lot of the excuses why you think you can’t get good.

The answer is simple, it just ain’t comfortable.

Charlotte and I continue on with the No BS way to get good...

I give you a little proud parent moment that shows a level of commitment that we can learn from. We also talk about decoupling your big hairy audacious goals from the calendar and why it's not always good to have a set time of when something should be achieved. It's about showing up and playing the long game.

If you are committed to getting good and living your best life, we hope you are. We continue is the no BS way here.

Today on the podcast, Charlotte and I continue the No BS way to get good... No this is not part 2... more like part 1.1. Today is a short episode (for once) and we cover two important points that are necessary to get good. We spoke about tiredness last week on part one. I mentioned test drive the body and today we go through what that means. We also talk about the beauty of the struggle.

If you are committed to getting good. We continue is the no BS way here.

Today on the podcast, Charlotte and I kick off part one of the No BS way to get good, no matter the endurance training you do. We cover things like what you are avoiding, the 5 simple things to change your outcomes and we go into each of those to help you better understand the mechanics and why each is important. We also look into something I believe I and many others are wrong with promoting this specific thought path and to wrap up part once we look at tiredness. It's a fact of life as an endurance athlete but we show you how you are likely killing your chances of success through the justifications we give ourselves in a subjective manner.

If you are committed to getting good. Here is the no BS way to put you on the path.

Before the Christmas break, I got the chance to speak with Marcus Leach.

You might be wondering who Marcus is. Marcus is amongst other things, an ultra cyclist, a freelance writer, a husband, a dad (of two young kids), and a lover of the mountains and challenging his limits. Marcus has ridden the 3 grand tours IN THE SAME YEAR the day before the pros come through. He’s raced a ton of ultra-endurance races and has put 4 Everests to his name.

Learn how Marcus stacked on a ton of weight, decided enough was enough, and changed the course of his life.

The majority of this podcast is talking about developing your mental muscle.

This week I chat with Don Schwartz. It’s a must-listen if you are looking to develop that mental edge.

You most likely won’t of heard of Don Schwartz.

I met Don last year as I coached his youngest daughter in a ski program here in Whistler.

Don is a mountain guide, was one of the original professional snowboarders, a survivor of a horrific helicopter crash that left 3 of his friends dead and himself with 3rd-degree burns. Don also is a winner of the Death Race.

If you don’t know what the death race is… you’ll learn a little bit about it in this episode but look it up. The race is not fair and it will test you to your limits of physical and mental endurance.

So tune in to hear how this incredible human overcame tremendous adversities and never let anything stop him from living his best life.

This week Charlotte and I sit down and talk about Nutrition and coming back to simplicity. No extremes, just focusing on the three macronutrients we need for health, fitness, and performance. If you're committed to getting the most out of your life by keeping healthy so you can be as fit and resilient as possible. Then you need to switch from focusing on a diet... because we all know diet is a short term approach. What we need is a healthy eating plan for life. Something you can implement anytime, anywhere.

This week Charlotte and I sit down and talk about Aerobic Deficiency Syndrome (ADS), what it is, how it comes about, and what you can and should do about it. We follow along from the pacing podcast and also discuss a couple of zones that as endurance athletes you need to be focusing on the most and how to do some DIY tests that if you want to use a heart rate monitor you can train where you need to be while cross-referencing how you feel (in the moment) to become an intuitive athlete.

As we know, the two main physiological systems for athletic performance are aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. We also know we can train both but we optimize one at the expense of the other. If you want to get your speed as high as possible in your endurance endeavors then we must optimize the aerobic system. It may come as counter-intuitive to you, but this is the system we rely on to move both efficiently and fast. No amount of high-intensity work will ever give you the best results.

This week Charlotte and I sit down and talk about pacing. Why with all the gadgets, the zones, the testing do athletes still struggle with pacing? Why do races continue to go south when we have everything available to us? Have we lost the ability to listen to our bodies from simply tuning out?

And how we can use our inner technology that is so much more sophisticated, speedy, and accurate but is frequently dulled by the noise.

Today I sat down for a coffee and a chat with the race director of Eco-Challenge - The Worlds Toughest Race, Kevin Hodder.

Everything about this screams the ability to endure. Not just what the teams have to do, to finish this mammoth of a course but everything that goes into designing, testing, and gaining permission to do the course. It's huge.

We cover a lot in this podcast and much take-home advice that will help any endurance athlete and not those just interested in Adventure racing.

Today I have Till Schenk joining me and we talk about his recent Stupid 7 (that’s 7 everestings in 7 days in 7 countries… well that was the plans but like many things in 2020, Covid has made us both have to pivot but also persevere). But we speak about much more than that… one thing is for certain there is a lot of overcoming challenges.

If you’re a triathlete and have raced in Europe, you may have been announced by Till, his a Sports Announcer & Event MC,  Storyteller, and Outdoor Lover.  He lives in the beautiful cycling mecca of Girona.

And… so it turns out that Till and I are seemingly cut from the same cloth. You’ll see how easily he ropes me into a gooder of a winter challenge. We virtually shook hands on it, so it’s a done deal.

I loved this conversation with Till. His enthusiasm can definitely be felt. I trust you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Today's podcast is about how the answers have changed but they have also stayed the same.

2020 has been a challenging year, to say the least. Races around the world have been canceled and life as we have known it has changed.

And it’s a continual challenge on many fronts. No matter your personal beliefs and biases.

So today we unpack what “The Answers have Changed” means and how that impacts your training. Especially my addition that seemingly makes no sense “but they have also stayed the same”.

Today I have Joanna Zeiger on the podcast talking all about CBD. Joanna was a pro athlete from 1998 to 2010. She was 4th in the first ever triathlon in the Olympics in Sydney and then 5 weeks later was 5th at the Ironman World Champs. In 2008 Joanna one the 70.3 World champs…

Joanna had a career-ending injury when a bottle handoff at the 2009 70.3 World Champs went horribly wrong. Joanna has been living with chronic pain ever since.

This led to Joanna eventually trying cannabis (with a lot of coercing from her husband, as her research at CU had focused on all the potentially damaging effects of cannabis, and being a professional athlete, drugs were are no-go zone… Something we go into in the podcast).

I’m super interested in the benefits of CBD… As we discuss it’s not for everyone and that’s ok. But there is a lot of information and miss information out there. So there are things you need to understand and this interview is a great starting place.

Enjoy

Your best will never be enough unless it’s always enough – David Roche

Today I have my run coach David Roche back on the podcast talking about their book (which is available now) which in my mind is required reading for all of us endurance athletes. The book might be using running and being a happy runner… you can just change running for Triathlete or cyclist or whatever. Charlotte and I got lucky and got an advanced copy… and Charlotte even got a quote on the back cover of the book! I’m so thankful we go an advance copy as it greatly helped me leading into my 110k race here in Whistler and then for my recent 100 miler. It wasn’t about Part two of the book on running principles but part one… running happy principles. A major one about self-acceptance and ultimately the results matter but they don’t matter.

As always enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

Momento Mori, why talking about death matters!

What’s really important to get results

What self-acceptance means and how it helps

The reason to decide now!

Why hitting your life performance goals can leave you depressed and not fulfilled

Cutting others and yourself some slack

Depression

The dangers of room temperature

Why the parts that suck are super important parts of the journey

How happiness is found in the atmosphere of growth

Being enough doesn’t depend on a race result

The striving for the result matters more than the result. the striving is the fun part.

And  more

So this is an episode I recorded after my 100 miler whilst down in California. We were staying with good friends Sean & Tiana Rockwell in Grass Valley and we always talk about loads of topics on nutrition and hormones etc. I got a handy new zoom pro4n recorder so we sat down in her office talking about a topic that is rarely discussed.

Tiana has been on the podcast before - episode 201, you can check that out - Tiana is an endurance athlete, dark chocolate lover, and a certified nutritional therapy practitioner who believes that real food can balance the body and produce personal record sports performance.

Now this one is for the ladies. But guys… This is a topic you probably want to understand a little more too.

Today we are talking about menstruation and why it matters, we talk expectations and why and how to support the different phases of your cycle.

As always enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The basics of the 28-day cycle
  • What happens in each phase
  • When the best days are for performance
  • Expectations
  • When it's a great time to race
  • Negatives of trying to control your cycle
  • High hormone and low hormone phases
  • Strategies of racing around your cycle
  • And  more

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • A bit about Kona
  • Why complexity is creating noise and hurting your performances
  • How to develop your tolerance to uncomfortableness
  • How not to let your devices and toys become oppressive dictators
  • My 100 miler race reflection on how I can improve - lessons!

Today I have Evan De Marco on the show. Evan is a sports medicine and nutrition expert, published author, public speaker and frequent guest on television, radio, and digital platforms. He is a successful entrepreneur whose interest in diet, health and supplements began as an athlete and consumer determined to improve an industry that was going through massive transformation. We talk all about CBD oil as right now the world seems obsessed by it. I have been testing it myself as a way to help with my sleep (which it has), and to lessen the inflammation from my ultrarunning pursuits. I'm feeling good and backing up... and it's part of a bigger puzzle.

We discuss many things on the podcast and with legalization happening around the world this could be an exciting supplement. And Cannabidiol is now legal as per WADA as stated here.

As always enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The obsession with CBD oil and why
  • The myths and facts
  • Is it legal for athletes?
  • Where is it legal?
  • The endocannabinoid system
  • What is Full Spectrum and what's that mean?
  • Dosing, can you have too much?
  • Benefits
  • Sleep
  • How to know what's quality and what's not
  • And so much more

Today I have good friend Peter Defty back on the show... It's been a while since he's been on and today we go into hydration and why it matters on so many levels. No matter if you are fat adapted or still a carb dependant athlete. At Ironman Canada we saw many athletes day's hampered due to screwing up hydration and fueling. A big goal of mine is to help stop that happening.

As always enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • How you get a competitive advantage in the heat
  • Why some athletes can tolerate the heat more
  • Pre-hydrating and why you should not do this
  • Sweat rates test
  • Do you really need supplemental sodium?
  • Understanding how dynamic hydration is
  • Thermoregulation
  • What to use
  • A basic starting point on needs
  • What electrolytes you DO need
  • Why big hits of caffeine in the heat will destroy you
  • And so much more

Today I have ultrarunner and coach Jeff Browning aka Go Bronco Billy on the show. Jeff just turned 47, recently won the Hard Rock 100, his 32nd 100 miler after coming 5th at the Western States Endurance 100 not that many weeks before. Now I won't say his 18 years of competitive ultrarunning have been plain sailing but in the last few years Jeff has focused on a few things specifically that have led him to be able to crush folks half his age after going through some health issues. So for all of us aging athletes, this podcast is an important one - and for you youngen listeners... You get away with it until you don't. Heed the advice.

I'm psyched on this one. I know you'll enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • What you do not want to be neglecting
  • Some simple time effective strength routines
  • Fitting it all in with a family
  • Coffee... Yes we talk coffee!
  • Why having a cross-training activity is super important (lucky triathletes...)
  • Candida flare ups
  • OFM
  • Understanding your personality
  • And so much more

Today Charlotte and I analyze Ironman Canada race day in the tough conditions that athletes were presented with on the day. Being on the ground we witnessed many mistakes that led to much slower times and many DNF's. It's a tough course but many athletes still performed and they did so because they executed wisely and likely adjusted expectations to match the conditions of the day while still racing. As always no matter the result, there are many lessons that can lead us to become better athletes.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Propper conditioning
  • What many athletes were lacking
  • How not to DNF
  • How to get lucky!
  • What stuffed some athletes up pre-race
  • Learning to suffer
  • A rant on what I hope not to see again
  • And more

Today I have my friend, clinical counselor and mental performance consultant Greg McDonnell on the podcast. We've tried for a while to make this happen and at the end of the day Greg came round to our place and we sat down and talked through the stories we tell ourselves. Because honestly, it's those narratives that can either build us up and keep us stuck seeing the same old crap over and over again.

I know you'll enjoy this one.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The stories we tell ourselves and how they either help or crush us
  • The foundations of these stories
  • Strategies on mental toughness development

This is a really important concept to grasp as it will impact not only your sports performance but also life.

No, we aren't going all woo-woo on you here. You'll see how you’ve played this out and how you can think better to, therefore, create better outcomes.

Charlotte takes us through a model of how thoughts create results and we give you some solid examples.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The Thoughts to Results Model
  • The question you need to ask
  • Why you dread some sessions
  • If you're not getting results, how to reverse engineer to see what the true causing factor is.

5 years... Can you believe the Fat Black podcast is 5 years old? Truth be told, the podcast is 5 years old as it originally started as 'The TriSpecific Podcast" on June 15, 2013, before morphing into "The Friday Fat Black" in November 2013, but this episode marks the 5th year that I've been putting out podcasts. Pat on the back.😆

Charlotte and I are again talking about performance. I should probably stop calling it the performance series, because each time we do a show, there will be topics and advice that can lead you by the hand to getting better performances. Today we cover a number of things, but after seeing a bunch of post-race debriefs, being around races and conversing with athletes we see a lot of self-sabotage. Not all of this is conscious by the way and we are going to help you stop doing these things and ultimately lead you (if you choose) to become a better athlete.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why post-race debriefs can improve future performances
  • Race day nutritional sabotages
  • Planning
  • All races can be A- Races
  • Practicing something never practiced
  • And more

How do you get the performances you are after? Well, between guest podcasts I have decided to go all in on giving you all the tools you need to get the race performances you are after, while also not killing your health. Today Charlotte and start continue with the performance series and what you need to do, or develop to become the best athlete you can. The topic of today is that you need to be strong. Triathlon is not just an aerobic endurance sport. In fact, it's a strength endurance sport. You need to be strong. You need to recruit more muscle fibers and to develop triathlon specific motor patterns to help you maintain form under duress. That is how you get your PR's and how you get the performances you dream of.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why strength matters
  • Low cadence on the bike
  • When to put strength training
  • Fatigue and how it differs depending on the system you are training
  • Strength specific training within the component sports
  • Bike trainers
  • And more

Today I have Charlie Jabaley on the show. Who the hell is Charlie… Charlie is a common man that found success at a young age in the entertainment industry. But Charlie had always been the fat kid. As he got more success he got bigger, he was depressed.

He was in a dark place, even when he won a Grammy, even with making a million dollars before the age of 30. He hit rock bottom. He told himself... what a person does in the dark is what he truly is. He left his successful career, his support network… to become the opposite of everything he ever was.

He moved from Atlanta to California. He retired from the music industry to chase his childhood dream of becoming an athlete. Charlie’s story consists of a brain tumor, depression, binge eating, obesity, starving himself, running marathons, gaining weight, becoming vegan, gaining more weight, he felt stuck and He knew everything had to change.

He took 2017 to become the exact opposite of everything he was. He completely turned his life around and now my health is in a diametrically different place. His brain tumor is shrinking. He lost 120lbs and in March he chased the cut off at Ironman New Zealand to fulfill a contract he wrote to himself.

Charlie is now riding across America on his dream machine tour. He still is facing challenges but his on the right channel and changing lives along the way. As he says… His story isn’t over yet.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The contracts
  • Quantum physics and energy
  • Chasing the time cut off at Ironman New Zealand
  • The dream of being an athlete
  • Making his own Nike commercial that went viral
  • Food addiction
  • Mindset
  • On becoming our own superhero
  • Why going bold in life is actually easier than playing small
  • Charlie’s advice on living
  • The dream machine tour
  • What has improved his life the most in the last 5 years
  • CEO Charlie to CEO of his own life
  • And so much more

Today I speak with Josh Sprague, he’s a tech and gear guy that has spent years racing in Ultras, Gravel Races, Ironman, mountain bike races, adventure races and traveling all over the globe in search of adventure.

Along the way, he wasn’t satisfied with the hydration packs on offer. From his frustrations came innovation and he created Orange Mud to change the way endurance athletes looked at hydration.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The right tools for the job
  • Mindset, this is what it's about
  • Where adventure started
  • The parallels between running a business and endurance sports
  • Being efficient as possible and smart
  • The best tool to use for thoughts/ideas out on the road or trail
  • Making better products
  • Not quitting
  • And so much more

I always enjoy speaking with Phil. The good doctor...

A wealth of knowledge and ultimately a person that just cares about our wellbeing. MAF is about health and fitness. Period and rather than people taking knowledge at face value Phil advises people to TEST it out for themselves. Figure out your own tolerances and amounts. Ultimately true health and awe-inspiring performances come from self-responsibility. Knowledge, real lasting knowledge doesn’t come from knowledge in of itself, it comes from action and reflection.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Conformational bias
  • Our obsession with wellness making us unwell
  • Searching for problems
  • Looking at the biggest issues impacting health (physical and mental)
  • Getting rid of nutritional confusion
  • Being treated as a person and not a symptom
  • Awareness of stress
  • Simple effective strategies for stress management
  • Dieting the ultimate obsession
  • Knowledge doesn't necessarily lead to knowledge
  • Keto
  • Race nutrition and figuring it out
  • MAF being "open source"
  • Vegan
  • And so much more

Damn, I enjoyed this conversation with Talbot. This kid (and yes at 41 I can call Talbot a kid) is out there creating his own path. He's done alright athletically but what he's doing in the sport of triathlon for the sport of triathlon to increase its exposure and create better experiences for all of us is downright inspiring. Talbot is on a tear and having a lot of fun along the way. His attitude is infectious and already has wisdom beyond his years.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Doing what you love
  • Why there is no competition
  • Creating content for the sport we love
  • Feedback is key to improvements
  • If you want something you must go get it
  • Surrounding yourself with the right people
  • Ask better questions to have better outcomes
  • Big scary changes
  • Keeping fit on a crazy schedule
  • Who inspires him? When surrounded by the best of the best
  • Being positive
  • Talbots challenge to you

Once again I have my buddy and phenomenal coach Grant Giles on the podcast. I love Grant's writing and musing that is developed not through theory (sure he's spent the time reading, being open and learning) but mostly through his only personal journey into this mental world. What's first is uncomfortable then opens space and quietens the noise. We are only just scratching the surface to what the mind can do for us.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The illusions of Fear
  • Judgment and how we are not our thoughts
  • Acceptance & non-resistance
  • Energy
  • Being a victim
  • Creating mind space
  • Mental toughness
  • Thought traps, spirals of negativity and how to stop it
  • Responsibility
  • Getting rid of the mind suffering and anxiety we place on ourselves
  • And so much more that leads us to perform better

To be honest I was a little apprehensive at first because last year Lisa accepted a public warning for an anti-doping rule violation. However, Lisa was awesome and open about the whole thing. Had I not had her on the show I  would have missed out on two fun conversations and you would have missed out on some very valuable lessons.

Yes, two… for the first time in nearly 5 years of doing this show… I simply didn’t follow my checks and balances and forgot to hit record. And I only realized after we wrapped up the show and I went to stop recording!

Lisa is fast, she has a great can-do attitude and will not give in, even when it gets tough as shown when she went through her public sanction. There’s some good lessons in this one for sure.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Running fast
  • Stress
  • The USADA Public warning
  • Finding balance
  • Injury and the windows of opportunity they present
  • Finding your training ranges
  • Pacing and breaking stuff down
  • Races you must do if you want a different challenge
  • Her answers to my favorite questions
  • And so much more

Conformational bias…

We all have it or have had it… I’m for one sick of it and want to be more pragmatic about it all.

But I still find myself getting angry because of it. Even with people who I know have others best interest at heart. I’ve been guilty of this, and I believe we've lost the forest for the trees!

This is a short podcast on confirmation bias and some strategies I believe will help you have better health and performance. I have the good doctor, Dr Phil Maffetone coming back on the show so we can dissect all these nutritional bias's and give you a simple path to better health and performance.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, I DISCUSS:

  • Confirmation bias
  • What simple effective day to day nutrition looks like
  • Does nutritional ketosis have a time and place?
  • Benefits of metabolic flexibility
  • Our obsession with health is making us unhealthy

The below are IF you want to look into nutritional ketosis more. I don't believe you need to go "keto" as an endurance athlete. I do believe it has a time and place, but it is not a requirement unless you have some untoward things going on (metabolic disease, cancer, pre-diabetes, type II). But if you need education, Dominic D' Agostino is your man.

I still remember the first time I 'met' Rich,  it was during the marathon at Ironman WA in 2007 when I broke 9 hours for the first time. Early on were running together, and he had one of those back then new fandangal Garmin watches that told your pace.

I still had the good ole trustworthy Timex 100 lap stopwatch. I remember asking him what pace we were running.

The answer: Too Fast. Haha.

This was off the back of when Rich won his age group in Kona and I’ve seen him take on a pro card, helped coached him for a bit, go through the ups and downs and seen him change his career to something he is way more passionate about and inevitably reducing his earnings but on the flip side enjoying his life with his family way more.

Last year Rich won Ultraman Australia and posted the fastest Ultraman overall time in the world.  It’s not an ‘easy’ course even though any Ultraman is not going to be easy. But this course is spicy. I know.

So we talk some on Ultraman, we talk some coaching, we break stuff down and his answers to the final questions are the goods.

Enjoy my conversation with Rich Thompson

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Is Ultraman then next step?
  • Do you need to train more volume than IM
  • Breaking down Rich’s worlds fastest Ultraman time
  • How the team matters (this is recurring!)
  • Racing strategies and adapting the plan on the go
  • The primary driver to get you to the finish line the fastest
  • The mental games
  • The athlete you have to become
  • All goals matter
  • Getting the most out of yourself
  • On losing what you objectives ought to be in training and racing
  • How life circumstances matter and being ok with them
  • And so much more

Today I have Dr Emily Splichal on the podcast. I was introduced to Dr Emily by a good friend of mine who used to head up Trigger Point in NZ and I knew as soon as her website loaded, I needed to have her on the podcast.

This quote by Leonardo Di Vinci "THE HUMAN FOOT IS A MASTERPIECE OF ENGINEERING AND A WORK OF ART" and then her intro paragraph on us holding the power to our own health and well-being and that we need to take ownership and commit to the plans and necessary steps needed to improve our lives. Boom.

This conversation really follows on from my one with Jay Dicharry on Running Rewired. There is simply stuff we need to do if we want to not only keep playing (our sports) but playing for the long term. Movement is freedom folks and to have freedom we need to move.

Ok without further ado.

Enjoy my conversation from a couple of weeks ago with Dr Emily Splichal

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • There is no magical quick fix
  • Dual tasking and cognitive challenges for optimal recovery
  • All the things you NEED to do to get better
  • The exploration of movement and why its needed to avoid injury
  • Life is sensory
  • Why you need belief in what you are doing
  • The power of the mental aspect in health and performance
  • Whats important
  • Over optimizing stimulation
  • Naboso innersoles for proprioception and sensory stimulation
  • Move Please MOVE
  • Optimizing the full puzzle
  • Why you need barefoot stimulation
  • The power of intention
  • Just getting out the door without activation hurts you success
  • Focus on SELF
  • Emily’s best advice

Wow the 250th episode… and it’s one that can definitely help your performances. The unfortunate truth is we all get niggles and injuries that aren’t fun. They kill consistency (which kills performance) and they can cause a helluva lot of frustration which is a massive killjoy.

The problem with running is we just go out and do it. No though other than one foot in front of the other. But where are we starting from? Do we wave muscles that are unplugged? What sort of movement blocks do we have?

Well, Jay Dicharry, one of America’s leading physical therapists is the man that elites go to because of his success with diagnosing and rebuilding injured endurance athletes.

He has been able to blend the fields of clinical practice and engineering to better understand and eliminate the cause of overuse injuries in endurance athletes. His unique approach works outside of the traditional model of therapy to correct imbalances before they affect performance.

Enjoy my conversation with Jay Dicharry.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The cadence myth
  • Move better before running better
  • Mobility and Stability
  • Fixing blocked areas
  • Unplugged Muscles
  • Neural plasticity
  • Everyone lands in front of COG
  • Deliberate practice
  • Precision movements
  • Fitting in the rewiring and performance sessions into your weekly schedule
  • Software v hardware problems and knowing whats what.
  • Being honest where you are
  • The chassis is important too
  • Cross training versus complementary training
  • Defining posture
  • Finding your balance point
  • Does it matter where you land
  • And so much more.

Ritch Viola is the founder of Every Man Jack, a company that produces a complete line of grooming products for men. In his short 10 odd years as an age group athlete he has been able to accomplish so much, like winning his AG in Kona and 70.3 worlds in the same year but also crush it as a businessman (he gives us some great pointers), husband, dad and for those racing in North America, you have likely seen very fast age groupers in the EMJ kits.

Ritch formed his own team in 2011 to help promote his business, but discovered so much more about how he could contribute to the triathlon community. Team Every Man Jack has grown into one of the most recognizable outfits in the sport and currently boasts a roster of 75 athletes.

I wanted Ritch on because he is just that. A very busy man that gets it done. He has been deliberate about setting up his life - something we go into.

Lots of goodies in this conversation. And …. Ritch has been kind enough to set us up with a 25% discount over at everymanjack.com. This offer is only good to Feb 16th - so get in on some excellent products that care about you and nature.

I love seeing products that don’t have the crap in them. So boys get yourself some goods or ladies buy your man some. Use the coupon code TRISPECIFIC and get 25% off (excludes Truckers and accessories)

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • That Kona swim start
  • The roll on effect of that first committed decision
  • Knowing thyself is very important
  • The benefits of being overcommitted
  • A typical day in the life
  • 3 key attributes to Ritch’s success
  • Staying in the moments
  • The biggest challenge in racing
  • Losing Meredith
  • What Ritch does when unmotivated or overwhelmed
  • Setting realistic goals
  • Your path
  • Team EMJ
  • And so much more.

Ok this week I was meant to bring you my conversations with a successful entrepreneur, businessman, AG Ironman and 70.3 World champion but we had some connectivity challenges. The editing just wasn’t going to cut it so we have rescheduled that for next week.

So… You have me again, maybe with a little ranting only done with love because I rather have all of us rise up, fight the good fight and achieve great things. So this one's an off the cuff episode of some of the things I see too much of (things that I’ve done) and things that just are screwing you over when it comes to bring out performances that are within you.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It's not about being smarter it's about making less stupid decisions
  • Common nutrition mistakes
  • Race pacing
  • Doing efforts correctly
  • On finding Mojo
  • Why the fight

Alrighty guys and girls. This week I'm talking about developing your mental strength.

We all know athletes that are tough as nails. No matter what a race throws at them they seemingly take it in their stride. While you may feel that when the going gets tough you don't seem to be able to rise to the occasion.

Well in todays episode, I cut to the chase and give you some in the trenches tools on how you can develop some GRIT to help you get to where you want to in this sport.

Lets do it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It is really simple
  • Making the right choices when it matters
  • Developing mental toughness from books
  • Excuses
  • Motivation
  • Why Repetition
  • A timely post from David Goggins

Ok, today I have a returning guest, the awesome Steph Corker.

Steph is championing women getting out there and kicking ass in what has been in the past a male-dominated world. Not just out on the race course but in boardrooms across the world.

Why is Steph awesome? She has an infectious attitude, is brave to get highly uncomfortable on a path to self-betterment but also to help inspire the females that follow. She also helped me out, really when I most needed it, on a run I definitely was not fit for. Yes, I can run long, but week out Ironman shape I was not. Good times. We cover a lot on today's conversation from equality to making the jump to pro, the fears of not belonging, obsession and more.

Sit back for the ride. Be inspired. Screw the naysayers and follow your heart.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The new pro Ironman rule changes
  • Theme songs (see below)
  • Being humbled
  • Imposter Syndrome
  • Making the jump
  • Obsession and the love of the moment
  • Clock lessons
  • Making and maintaining benchmarks
  • Consistency
  • Staying the course
  • Equality
  • Making the main thing the main thing
  • And more

Ok guys and girls… This week on the podcast I’m laying out some of the things that I did and continue to do that led me to going from an 11:27 to an 8:57 Ironman time. I asked the folks in the TS Cafe, if they just wanted interviews or also me speaking about my philosophies on training, racing, race execution, mental toughness and more so we can continue to give you strategies for success in your endurance endeavours.

Well the answers were clear, with many wanting some rants. And rants are just done with love, because I really just want to see you become better.

So here we go, with the first of 2018… Covering some topic areas of how I too a lot of time off of my Ironman PR and won my age group. These things still help me today and they will help you if and when applied with consistency.

Lets do it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It’s got to excite you

  • The love of the process

  • Attitude
  • Desire and intention
  • Commitment
  • Failure
  • Advice
  • Support
  • Embracing discomfort

On today's show, I have the author of "Spitting in the Soup" Mark Johnson. Mark's book has done a phenomenal expose into the history of sports really, drugs, supplements and more. I think we’ve all only been scratching the surface layer when it comes to drugs in sport and how our thinking has been created by fiction, sensationalism and more.

Marks book as opened my eyes to that we have only been using surface level thinking, been sheep to sensationalist and at many times fictional media and to the pursuit of something that never existed in the first place. Have we been ignorant? Has sensationalism got us away from some facts? Marks book uncovers so many things I would have never even thought to contemplate. His work is thorough.

Has it relaxed my view on drugs in sport? I don’t know, I don’t think so as I still don’t like the ‘taste. I’d still like to line up and race people on ‘equal terms’ but even that is a ridiculous notion because what is equal? We have full-time age groupers, we have those more financially well-off, or who live in better environments, or won the genetic lottery.

There just can’t be this level playing field. However… seeing what we can get out of the cards we've been dealt I believe is a worthy goal. For me that drives me, to see what I can do with training the trials of miles and the miles of trials, getting mentally tougher. So many of us may not have won the genetic lottery but time and time again, we've seen that genetics can only take us so far. The heart and grit of an athlete... Well, that’s hard to measure now isn't it?

Anyway… As you’ll soon see, the moral playground surrounding drugs in sport changed… What was once not taboo now is. There was never this Eden… But maybe with societies taste for lifestyle drugs and the enormous commercial and government forces promoting the medicalization of every aspect of our lives… society could benefit from drug-free roles models and using sport as that vehicle. That’s a tough goal. But dream big.

Enjoy my conversation with Mark.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Pierre de Coubertin and how his aristocratic ideals and goals shaped sport
  • The impact of societies insatiable appetite for pharmaceuticals
  • What sport or professional sport was and really still is about
  • The hypocrisy with performance-enhancing drugs to get more out of life… but our outrage on drugs in sport.
  • The inherent corruption of those creating the rules
  • Knut Jensen and how his death changed sport
  • Eden never existed - the truth on drugs in cycling
  • The Iron Curtain and geopolitical ambitions
  • Doping, health, and safety
  • ADHD a cover for gaming the system
  • Eugenics
  • When doping become morally corrosive
  • And more

Today on the Fat Black, I have Rachel McBride on the show... The purple Tiger is a badass Canadian triathlete that doesn’t care what other people think. After spending her high school & college years as a “goth, punk rocker, artist type” (as she puts it) she moved to the freezing tundra of Ottawa, Canada for grad school and turned to running to stay warm. She quickly caught the triathlon bug and hasn’t back. After claiming her ITU National Age Group Champion title in her first year of racing, Rachel went full force into training and racing.

She works hard and it is paying off. She won 70.3 Austin, was 3rd at Ironman Canada after being first out of the water and then crushing the bike course record - she’s also quite the handy trail runner.

Rachel has some serious prowess on the race course and she won’t back down from any challenge. And I know she has set some mighty ones for herself…

The “Purple Tiger” is on the rise. And she will succeed. That intention shines.

Enjoy...

Pictures: Mark Mackay Photography

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The backstory to "Be The One" and what it means to Rachel
  • Going from mid to back of pack to leading out swims
  • The development of being a high performer
  • Growing up and Rachels journey to Tri
  • How her 'selfishness' impacts, inspires others
  • The origins of the Purple Tiger
  • Where her inspiration comes from
  • Getting after it
  • Adulting
  • Dealing with setbacks and it's not going to be 100% amazing all the time
  • The need to self-recognize
  • Passion
  • Pivoting and change
  • Bike dominance
  • On not quitting
  • Struggling with post-race blues
  • And much more awesome

Today I have Bob Babbitt on the show. Bob is USA Triathlon Hall of Fame and Ironman Hall of Fame Inductee and a guy who’s name is writ large across the Ironman story. You’d be hard-pressed to find a person that has done more for our sport than Bob Babbitt. This guys passion over 3 decades is just on another level. The giving back and the building of brands where the goal and outcomes have been that 'everyone wins'. There's so much we can learn from this standup guy and a fantastic storyteller. This was a long conversation so if you have to split it up. It’s worth it. So very much worth it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why race shorter races
  • The Business plan for competitor magazine and all that followed
  • Bobs first Ironman Hawaii on Oahu with his Police auction fire charred bike
  • How lucky we have it
  • The lessons of working with disadvantaged kids from rough upbringings
  • His favorite interviews
  • What his tagline "Inspire - Inform - Ignite" means
  • The start of CAF and what its done
  • Bob's best and worst investments
  • The best bits of advice he's been given
  • Bob's call to us athletes
  • And more

So today I have Dirk Bockel on the show. It's been a long time since I've caught up with Dirk but we could have chatted for hours and likely would have if he wasn't flying to Germany to the US the next morning for his upcoming book tour.

We talk about his new book The Art of Triathlon Training which is very thorough and definitely worth the read.

The book is in depth. It takes you through the theory and practice of it all. From taking those first steps, doing the groundwork, the tools for the job, the training, getting race ready, race day, the day after… analyzing your race and the mind of a champion. All very important and all could be topic points and a podcast on there own.

Today we dive into the journey. The mind stuff. Yes we will go down some training/racing do’s/don'ts rabbit holes but so much of what we can or cannot achieve is packaged in that grey matter between our ears.

I enjoyed this chat with Dirk and I think you will too.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The ego and losing the ego
  • No work life balance
  • Attacking and going all in
  • Pivoting and life after triathlon
  • The routine
  • 10 days of silence
  • The Extremes
  • Planning and writing it down
  • Balancing the four anchors and how to best navigate
  • The love of the process
  • Being who you are
  • On days off days in training, life and business
  • Life - it doesn’t begin with triathlon and it doesn’t finish with triathlon
  • Developing your inner game
  • And more

Always a pleasure chatting with Steph and I am excited to see her new program, LCHF Endurance... Make sure you check out her LCHF Endurance FB account (below) and for those non-Vegans, the Chicken abundance bowl looks fab. If you're vegan, simply sub the chicken out.

Today I have Jocelyn McCauley on the show. I met Jocelyn McCauley at the daylight mind cafe in Kona this year and we tried to get a podcast done in the craziness of race week. It didn’t happen, but we finally got there.

Jocelyn started the sport of swim bike run in 2013, in fact, she registered for her first 70.3 and shortly after found out she was pregnant. Well, she trained as much as she could and 11 weeks after the birth of her daughter she completed Muncie 70.3 in under 5 hours!

She went on to do her first Ironman and qualified for Kona. And in her second IM, she added IM World Champion to her name and first amateur female. Her first IM pro win was Mallorca in 2016 and then she won IMNZ in 2017 and ran a smoking 2:59. 10 in Kona this past October … This mum is the real deal and we speak about her trajectory and her lessons as a 2nd year pro. Many of these lessons we should heed.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did interviewing Jocelyn.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- Self identity
- Pro and AG - it's a different race
- Logistics of racing with a 3-month-old
- Her trajectory in the sport and how athletic background matters
- Fitting it all in being a mother and wife
- Visualizing
- Making it and keeping it fun
- Her Jekyll and Hyde personality
- Breaking down her Kona race
- The 10 things she learned as a 2nd-year pro
- And so much more

Today I have Simon Whitfield on the Fat Black. Simon shouldn’t need any introduction, however… For those that don’t know. Simon won the first Olympic gold in Sydney 2000 and in this interview he tells how he believes he got a leg up on every other competitor well before the course was even set. He won that event after going down on the bike with 14 others and worked his way back. I remember sitting in the stands with Charlotte watching that live and thinking damn near 2 hours is a long time to be racing. Who would’ve known some 17 years later I'd be having a conversation with Simon. Ahh, the poetry of life.

Simon also won silver in Beijing a gold at the 2002 Commonwealth games among so many other medals was know for having a great kick in the finish straight. One of my favorite ever finishing pictures is the one above by the legend that is Dely Carr of Simon outsprinting Brad Kahlefeldt, Jan Frodeno and Kris Gemmell to the line at the Hyvee race for $200K… Absolutely Rivetting.

I really enjoyed my chat with Simon and especially why having and cultivating your imagination is so important.

Anyway, I’ll leave it at that so you can fully enjoy. There's some big life lessons in here.

Image: Delly Carr

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • How Simon orchestrated his gold medal in Sydney
  • Chasing the ball and how it helps you find that little bit more
  • The connection of fiction with champions and why fiction is so important
  • Daily rituals and why you need to be disciplined with them
  • Why cultivating your imagination is so crucial to everything
  • Deliberate orchestration of that you wish to attain
  • Performance decision making
  • Losing self-authority of our attention span
  • What’s occupying your mental landscape
  • The overwhelming characteristics of champions like the Brownlee brothers, Daniela Ryf, Jan Frodeno, Chrissie Wellington, Nicole Spirig
  • Why maintaining your breath is everything
  • Creating and cultivating your environment to success
  • Keeping it simple
  • State story strategy
  • The benefits of a systematic process
  • On navigating an about end to a triathlon career
  • The butterfly story
  • The best response from Simon’s dad after he came second to Jan in Beijing
  • The importance of play
  • Nutrition
  • N+1 training

Today I have Mike Maric on the show. Mike is a medically trained forensic scientist that loves freediving and he believes that the quality of a person's life depends on the quality of their breathing. On his website, he says “when you master your breathing, you'll master your body, your mind, your life “ - I believe there is a lot of truth in that statement. We are always looking for ways to improve performance, yet we typically overlook the simple but not easy ones. Sleep and breathing are two of those.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why breathing is the ultimate cross-training tool.
  • Breathing and life
  • Co2 training and why it helps with dealing with open water swimming. And why triathletes should learn and do flip turns in a pool and why Co2 tolerance is harder developing out of the pool
  • Repetition is needed.
  • Becoming the master of your breathing.
  • The science
  • All life is in the breathing
  • Making our muscles work better without oxygen
  • Where Mike’s mind is when he is about to do a big freedive
  • Reducing recovery time
  • Losing a friend and leaving the water
  • Defeating his two biggest enemies (himself and fear)
  • How to improves one breathing

The clock is doing its thing ticking down to the start of the 2017 Ironman World Championships. The vibe is electric and you can feel the nerves mounting.

Today I have my brother from another mother Scott Jones on the podcast. You can find an interview I did with Joneser on the Triathlon World Summit at FB160 this episode is often quoted as a favourite. Joneser is a winner in life… this guy packs more into life than most with more responsibilities in life than most (he’s a rear admiral of the US Navy and a commercial pilot, loving husband, father and kick ass athlete).

We talk about Kona and how to race well out here and we also cover the ageing athlete. Joneser always comes out with nuggets of pure gold. Listen with your ears peeled back.

Enjoy.

Today I’m speaking with the plucky Aussie Greg Welch. Better known as Welchy. he really doesn’t need an introduction but for those, who for some reason do not know who Welchy is… he is the charismatic Aussie and the first Aussie to win here in Kona back in 1994.

I got the pleasure of sitting down at the Oakley house here in Kona with Greg and having a very quick conversation before the party started. There’s a bit of background noise but honestly who cares. We are in Kona sitting by the ocean chewing the fat about the race.

Good times.

And if you are here in Kona, go check out Oakley’s new helmets and glasses. They are pretty sweet.

Enjoy.
