The Endurance Specific Podcast (general)

Today I have Mike Maric on the show. Mike is a medically trained forensic scientist that loves freediving and he believes that the quality of a person's life depends on the quality of their breathing. On his website, he says “when you master your breathing, you'll master your body, your mind, your life “ - I believe there is a lot of truth in that statement. We are always looking for ways to improve performance, yet we typically overlook the simple but not easy ones. Sleep and breathing are two of those.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why breathing is the ultimate cross-training tool.
  • Breathing and life
  • Co2 training and why it helps with dealing with open water swimming. And why triathletes should learn and do flip turns in a pool and why Co2 tolerance is harder developing out of the pool
  • Repetition is needed.
  • Becoming the master of your breathing.
  • The science
  • All life is in the breathing
  • Making our muscles work better without oxygen
  • Where Mike’s mind is when he is about to do a big freedive
  • Reducing recovery time
  • Losing a friend and leaving the water
  • Defeating his two biggest enemies (himself and fear)
  • How to improves one breathing
  • And so much more

The clock is doing its thing ticking down to the start of the 2017 Ironman World Championships. The vibe is electric and you can feel the nerves mounting.

Today I have my brother from another mother Scott Jones on the podcast. You can find an interview I did with Joneser on the Triathlon World Summit at FB160 this episode is often quoted as a favourite. Joneser is a winner in life… this guy packs more into life than most with more responsibilities in life than most (he’s a rear admiral of the US Navy and a commercial pilot, loving husband, father and kick ass athlete).

We talk about Kona and how to race well out here and we also cover the ageing athlete. Joneser always comes out with nuggets of pure gold. Listen with your ears peeled back.

Enjoy.

Today I’m speaking with the plucky Aussie Greg Welch. Better known as Welchy. he really doesn’t need an introduction but for those, who for some reason do not know who Welchy is… he is the charismatic Aussie and the first Aussie to win here in Kona back in 1994.

I got the pleasure of sitting down at the Oakley house here in Kona with Greg and having a very quick conversation before the party started. There’s a bit of background noise but honestly who cares. We are in Kona sitting by the ocean chewing the fat about the race.

Good times.

And if you are here in Kona, go check out Oakley’s new helmets and glasses. They are pretty sweet.

Enjoy.

Today we kick off the Kona special with Kona local and swim legend Karlyn Pipes. I’ve had Karlyn on the podcast back in episode 140.

Karlyn is a swimmer, swim technique coach, author and inspirational speaker. She has established more number one rankings than any other Masters-level swimmer in history and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015.

Do yourself a favour and get her book The Do Over - an inspiring story of her do-over from early swim success to addiction and then recovery through swimming.

This year she has been on a tear in masters swimming and I got lucky enough to have a swim session with her in her endless pool yesterday which had me focused and playing around in the water in today's Ho’ala Ironman Worlds Champs training swim.

Her swim lessons also come packaged with metaphors for life.

My conversation with Karlyn will help you become a better swimmer. And if you happen to be on the Big Island reach out to Karlyn via her contact page at Karlynpipes.com. You won’t regret it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Deconstructing and reconstructing my swim
  • How to swim the Kona Ironman
  • One of the worst pieces of advice given to get your hips up
  • See the fishes, hear the fishes and talk to the fishes and why you’ll want to do this in open water swimming especially in Kona.
  • Why you don’t want to finish your stroke
  • Rolling - being on your side is not faster
  • Finding quiet power
  • Contrasting your swimming to SEE and FEEL the differences
  • Why you DO NOT want to be feeling the water
  • Scissoring your kick is only the ‘symptom of the disease’
  • Warming up for Iroman
  • Why Karlyn writes KNOW on her hand/arm in competition
  • Where to start depending on how you breathe
  • Finding space in the turns at the buoys
  • And so much more goodness.

Ok, today I have Denis Mikhailov on the show. Denis is not a triathlete but he definitely IS an athlete and his big wall climbing adventures definitely fall into the endurance category and he has much to share. 8-14 odd hours out in the elements, working out the puzzle of performance to get to the ultimate destination. That puzzle includes the fitness and strength required to get the job done, not to mention fuelling and Denis’s path led him to create nomad nutrition and of course that mental fitness is so key. All of which we discuss on the show.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Deconstructing performance
  • Why structure is so important
  • Your next performance breakthrough comes down to your mental training
  • When you have to get out there
  • Zen Archery
  • The process of coming back mentally from a scary fall
  • Food equals health
  • Why he went raw vegan and the day he gave it up
  • The morning ritual
  • The need to create great adventure food
  • His book recommendation that is not a book.
  • Ingredients matter
  • The REV dry process to preserve food and keeping it as it should be
  • The biggest food myth
  • And so much more

Today’s guest is coach Jesse Kropelnicki who is the coach of two past professional athletes guests - Angela Naeth and Linsey Corbin.

What I like about Jesse and why he has had so much success is that it’s not just about the training. When things go pear-shaped most peoples knee-jerk reaction is “it must have been the training” - when most of the time it’s simply some other limiter that is getting in the way of being able to leverage the training. These limiters are typically daily nutrition, or race fuelling, race execution or simply the athlete's mental fitness is not there.

We get into the nitty-gritty in this conversation and as usual, there are great lessons that can help you in your quest to be a better athlete.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Managing your mental space for high performance
  • Why context in any situation matters
  • There is no balance
  • The strategy to fixing your limiters
  • The foundations of performance
  • Unorthodox training methods
  • Setting up your environment for success in training, business and in life
  • Durability and why that is a key ingredient
  • The critical system you need in place
  • The stress budget and why you need to understand this
  • And so much more

Today's podcast is my conversation with pro triathlete, Angela Naeth. And let me tell you, we get deep and Angela really lets it all out there. This makes it so special - we all have ups and downs and the best of life’s hurdles to overcome. Angela shows her vulnerability but it also shows that that is the true path and the reason why we should truly be ourselves.

Angela grew up here in beautiful British Columbia, Canada and is known in the tri world for her powerhouse of a bike. She is a multiple 70.3 Champion, twenty-five 70.3 podium finisher, Ironman 2014 Chattanooga Champion (her third Ironman) and the 2015 North American Ironman Champion and had gone sub 9 twice.

Angela has a Masters degree in Physical Therapy and Bachelors in Health Sciences… and in her quest to give back she has created this great women's triathlon/cycling community iracelikeagirl.com which gives her the opportunity to support others in the sport of triathlon.

I really enjoyed this conversation with Angela and I think you will too…

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The coaches she's had, (including Chucky-V, Mark Allen, Sutto and current coach Jesse Kropelnicki) and the invaluable lessons
  • The value of sacrifice
  • Why simplicity rules
  • How RedBull changed her life
  • What it takes to be an endurance athlete and what it takes to be pro
  • Becoming a pro today versus in 2008
  • Belief and being yourself
  • Stress
  • Her injury journey and getting through it
  • The biggest obstacle
  • Where age groupers screw it up (mostly)
  • A book everyone needs to read.
  • The best advice she has ever received. [KM - This is it! Solid advice for all]
  • And more.

Today I have a conversation with my ultra running coach, David Roche. David is not only a great runner - he’s the 2016 Way Too Cool 50k winner, the 2012 and 2014 USA Trail 10k National Champion, the 2014 US Sub-Ultra Trail Runner of the Year, a member of the 2014 US Mountain Running Team, the 2015 US Long Distance Mountain Team, and the 2017 US Trail World Champs team.

David is also great coach, with a strong community and has athletes crushing it over various distances every weekend. (Like Cat Bradley who was one of the 2.5% of people that got a ticket to Western States in the lottery and went on to WIN)  But as the title of his blog spot is… Some Work, ALL Play lays down his life philosophy of having fun. Yes it’s the trials of miles for success but love of the process and understanding that We are stardust with delusions of grandeur. And None of this stuff matters except the memories we make. So DECIDE to MAKE good memories no matter what. There’s a lot to learn in that view point and also loads to learn in my conversation that applies to any endurance sport.

David made this call work off a mountain in Colorado to fit this in, so at times there’s a little wind disturbance towards the end as a thunderstorm was rolling in but it’s all good.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Coaching, Performance and getting the ingredients right.
  • Exposing Talent

This week the tables are turned and I'm getting interviewed by non other than my awesome wife, Charlotte Paul. It's more a conversation about my experience of my first 100 mile run race through the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. Today's podcast is a long one... but you know what, the race was kinda long.

As per usual, lots of lessons for all of us and I know how much it helps to go over and debrief a race. Because we can always find areas to improve upon. For me, this race was everything and more than I could have hoped for or imagined.

The day before the race, there was this shop (unfortunately closed) across from the Blacktooth brewery where race registration was and it had this sign - "Today is a good day for a good day" -  it made me smile and I woke up with that in my head on race morning. Positivity IS a performance enhancer :)

Ok, Lets do this.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why the hell run a 100 miler?
  • Commitment to the goal
  • The training and getting it done, no matter the weather
  • My 3 goals for the event
  • The road trip down and making the best of suboptimal
  • Not being able to consume food for near 18 hours
  • Missing my crew at 50k in
  • My organisational mistakes
  • Flirting with hypothermia (again)
  • Being adaptable to what mother nature throws at you on the day
  • The pacing strategy
  • Keeping my head entertained for 24 hours
  • The major lessons
  • Coaches messages
  • It takes a team to succeed
  • The standoff with a Moose

This week I have the first person I ever spoke to in the sport of Triathlon. Teresa Rider was the then partner of John Hill (our first coach) and was a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Teresa proves that you’re never too old to start and etch away at blowing the doors off of what’s possible. She started at 33 years young.

With NO swim background Teresa breastroked her way through her first Triathlon swim. She went on to Ironman and did Kona 12 times with 9 podiums, two of those being an age group World Champion.

Teresa is married to Scott Jones a man I have so much respect for and someone that is like a brother too me. He was part of the Triathlon World Summit and you can listen to his fantastic interview here [FB#160] this is one power couple that is for sure.

I’m stoked to have been part of this amazing woman's journey and she played a massive part in both Charlotte’s and mine for which I have so much gratitude for.

Enjoy this and listen with both ears. A lot of wisdom and knowledge from Teresa. Over 2 decades in the sport, retired healthy and injury free. Success leaves clues.

Lets do this.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • From party girl to triathlete and beyond
  • Developing resiliency and thus longevity
  • Breastroking her first Triathlon to winning her age group in Kona (twice)
  • Why a coach matters
  • A big key to getting fast
  • It's not talent, but you can expose 'talent'
  • You must develop this skill set to have any sort of success
  • Why breaks are good
  • The benefits of this sport
  • Giving back and paying it forward
  • And so much more

Well… there have been no podcasts due to the simple fact of moving back to Whistler and all the craziness around that and then moving in and getting everything done before this trip to Bighorn 100 for my 100 miler.

Honestly I just ran out of time to edit one from Teresa Rider and another from Chris Kelly. They will be out on our return along with a special episode (I’ll keep under wraps) and then once the results are in, a follow up with InsideTracker on my post 100miler bloods.

Ok… so today is just a quick one from musings on the road and a lesson to me and that can help you out

Lets do this.

 Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why we need to create urgency for important but not urgent tasks and how it helps your goals including race goals.
  • The importance of scheduling
  • A 'new' goal setting process I'm in love with.
  • Committing to a goal when there is so much other FUN things to do
  • The best feedback loop that keeps you motivated

Today I speak with Mariah and Laura ( I mean Sassy) from Inside Tracker about their blood testing but all about my bloods from my pin prick in time- InsideTracker has become well-known among athletes for its ‘never-ending scientific discoveries and relentless pursuit of the health movement’. Its vision is to extend the quality and duration of human life and performance by… ‘empowering individuals with information they need to manage and optimize their own health – by providing a dynamic, personalized analytic platform at the intersection of biochemistry and technology, then distilling the results into simple, natural, and sustainable paths for people to follow’.

But what does that mean in English?

1. InsideTracker uses your blood

2. Takes the key biomarkers found in your blood to determine your course of action for any goal

3. No more guessing - your blood - your body - your tailored results.

And as their hashtags states. #BloodDontLie

Lets do this.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • We go deep into my bloods
  • What the zones or levels are and why you want to optimize
  • The different tests
  • The times to test and why that matters
  • Common mistakes
  • Why it's good to look under the hood
  • PR'ing your recovery!
  • The need for more than one test
  • A look into InsideTracker
  • And more

Todays podcast is a topic close to my heart. Without a doubt it was screwed up gut biome that switched on my celiac gene and it was the thing I needed to fix to get strong and resilient again. So Im fortunate to have one of the worlds leading experts in the field on the Fat Black.

Currently she is training some functional medicine leaders to approach gut protocols with her expertise and speaks around the world and has been on various summits.

  • Rebuilding the biome of endurance athletes
  • Understanding that our guts our on the OUTSIDE
  • The species of healthy gut biome
  • Testing your guts
  • The ABC's

Today we have a friend, someone I’ve coached in Ironman and someone who supported Charlotte and I back in Australia with Nike. Now Mike may work and love Nike but he is not biased towards the brand in such a way that - no not everyone should run in Nike. In fact in todays conversation we do talk about who the best person is to listen too when it comes to shoe choice.

We blow the doors off pronation, we talk run mechanics, whats important, the show industry and of course this little project of Breaking 2. Theres a link in the show notes @ trispecific.com that links to nikes page for the live event. I might just be cracking open a beer any 8:45pm Friday night here in Canada.

Ok lets get into it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • What's important when it comes to shoes and running
  • Run mechanics
  • The shoe industry
  • Shoes and injuries
  • The one thing with running you have to make the one thing
  • Who you should listen to when it comes to shoe choice
  • What pronation is and does it matter
  • How to ensure success in your running shoes

This week I get to virtually sit down with John Kelly. The 15th finisher at the Barkley Marathon - which has been going for way more years than finishers of the event. It’s really the end point of ultra running. If you haven’t watched the Netflix doco do it.

John is a husband and in his words to an incredible wife, the proud father of 3 kids under the age of 3 (the latest addition are twins) - he works as a data scientist in a start up in Washington DC and he runs, bikes, hikes to support his ability to do his job with a clear mind. And he does swim but only because he likes to race and challenge himself in triathlons.

John is racing Kona this year and after his recent Barkley success and the amount of interviews his had.. I did not want this to be another same same interview focusing on the Barkley. No, I wanted to dig deeper and have a conversation around making it work with a very young family (shows how real communication allows it to work), and how he uses his commute to do hie training. How he got the necessary elevation training done in an essentially flat area, his training, the mental differences between ultra running and racing Ironman and some really great stuff on goals.

I really enjoyed this conversation and there are many take home points that if implemented will not only help bring out the best versions of ourselves but make us better athletes.

Ok lets get into it.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- The benefit of adapting your goals in the race
- Developing the confidence to keep pushing when things go south
- Lessons of self
- The 3 priorities when setting goals
- Getting it done in a time compressed environment
- The mental differences between Ironman racing and ultra running
- The performance benefits on hiking
- The training
- Believing it's possible, even at a stretch
- Failures
- And more

This week I get to have a super fun conversation with multiple Xterra and Off Road World Champion Lesley Paterson. Lesley's story is an  inspirational one from early success to quickly becoming disillusioned with the sport when sports scientist tried to bake her in the 'one size fits all' performance mould. After bunch of years off she got reacquainted to getting muddy (past rugby days... yes you read that right) and chiseled herself to become an Xterra World Champion. Throw in Lyme disease into the mix, learning to deal with negative Nora and all the other mental conundrums that we athletes face on a daily basis... mix in her sports psychologist hubby Simon and very soon you to can have an exceptional book in your hands that could be life changing for you.

Reading it won't do that... rolling up your sleeves and creating awareness of your inner self  and doing the exercise contained within will help. The book is hilarious and super practical. And with a title "The Brave Athlete - Calm the Fuck Down and Rise to the Occasion" how can it not be a winner.

Lesley is the real deal. The Scottish lass doesn’t mind dropping an f-bomb to two and is just passionate about helping others rise to the occasion.

I thoroughly enjoyed my chat with her and I know you will too.

LET’s do it.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The story
  • Not fitting the mould
  • Overcoming the hurdles
  • The gradual process
  • The Why
  • Asking Why! Be a 3 year old.
  • Our existential crisis
  • Why not giving a shit can be the catalyst to your best ever results
  • The need and the reason for gratitude
  • Our 3 brains
  • Lesley's alter ego and why it's needed
  • The single most important psychological trail we need.

This week I get to welcome back Rachel Joyce aka the Joycenator back on to the Fat Black podcast. We had Rachel on way back for episode #146 where she gave us a lot of insights and clues into what it is to be a champion athlete and how we can all take on the traits of champions to bring out our best selves. Well today we kind of continue that thread but in the new light of Rachel being a mum to 7 month old Archie and coming back to racing. Recently Rachel lined up a Oceanside 70.3 as her first race back (her race choice speaks volumes about her and choosing a race with with a stacked field). You will most definitely hear little Archie throughout the interview because he decided being awake listening to mum speak was way more exciting than sleeping.
Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- Making it work
- Making peace with her past achievements
- The decision to come back to racing
- The balancing act
- Choosing the tough races
- When the TrainingPeaks box goes RED.
- The value of benchmarks
- The enjoyment of the puzzle
- And much more.

This week it's my absolute pleasure to sit down with my better half Charlotte Paul. Ironman champ and super mum, talking all about her time as a triathlete. From age grouper to professional and it being the vehicle where she went from a life of no direction to one of finding purpose and self belief. It was fun going into the memory archives, having a fun conversation and give you many take homes to improve you as an athlete and person.

I trust you'll enjoy this as much as we did recording it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why you need to be patient
  • Finding purpose and belief
  • Preparing to win
  • The hated session that improved an already fast run
  • At the end of the day... What really matters
  • Mental toughness
  • Pacing
  • Race week mishaps and how we sabotage ourselves
  • The road to success
  • And much more.

This week I chat Pete Bryceland whom I was introduced to via a TS LIFE athlete. Pete has an interesting background working his way up through the McDonalds ranks of management and training which in reality provided the foundation of solid systems. He set his focuses on learning and implementing NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming) although he's not conventional in that approach, hypnotism, mental health, buisness and personal coaching.

This was definitely a mind expanding conversation.

Grab yourself a tasty beverage and enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- The lessons from 'failures'
- What NLP is
- Why we need to ask questions
- The thinker and the prover
- Depression and the myth of chemical imbalance
- Being Response-able
- The curse of wishful thinking
- Where the power is
- Hypnosis - why?
- And much more.

This week I chat with TS LIFER, and king juggler Tim Corbett.

Tim is happily married 5 time Ironman has 5 kids and juggles family, business, coaching and competing. Right now Tim should be a 6x IMer but his most recent one in stunning Taupo NZ was done in dusted in a sub 10min time (something we discuss in the show).

He has a passion for making Ironman training and competing, family friendly helping ‘normal’ mums and dads become Iron-parents.

With a background in sport science, behaviour change and marketing, he is the Director of Thinking at Deep Limited, a specialist health advertising and marketing agency. Tim looks to mix research with real life experience so doing Ironman not only makes you fitter and faster but a better mum or dad. Your legs will only take you so far, it’s your heart that gets you across the line.

A strong believer in the power of the team, he believes Ironman should not be pursued as an individual sport but as a chance to grow communities.

His wife, Catherine, is a strong believer in the power of the ‘weapon of mass distraction’. Expensive, shiny pieces of jewellery that ‘distract’ from the pain of watching, waiting and dealing with the whining.

Grab yourself a tasty beverage and enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Weapons of mass distraction
  • Why you need to know your partner!
  • Ironman training spin offs
  • Doubling up and how it's a key to making it all work.
  • Significant supporter tips
  • Why we're privileged
  • The right type of bank deposits
  • Smart insurance
  • And more candid conversation

We love an adventure; wether it's climbing glaciers, Mountain biking across deserts, or just exploring our own backyards. Seeking adventures like these are a great way to switch-off from the world, close-out the triathlon noise, but most importantly: have fun and grow! Today Kristian chats with the guys from IGO Adventures. Never heard of it? What is it? Well Bobby sums it up perfectly here:

IGO was born as an idea when I completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. After a life-changing 48 days at sea, the euphoria of the finish was powerful. I believe everyone should experience that feeling and have it as frequently as possible. Therefore, I was determined to answer the question: If I bottled the adrenaline and emotions I felt upon seeing Antigua after 2 months of rowing, how can I give that ‘adventure ecstasy’ to people who only have a week to spare? The answer is IGO.

- Bobby Melville – Founder

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • What is IGO Adventures
  • The DNA that makes these events high on the bucket list
  • The world records and how IGO came about
  • The events on offer

We live in a complicated world, and each year we see the sport that we love become more and more complex, yet results remain unfulfilled. If it was as easy as "the fastest bike, the latest gadget, the most complex training plan, and supplement X, wouldn't everyone be smashing their respective goals? Today we highlight the key areas that we see triathletes overcomplicating and look at workable solutions to creating simplicity.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • What you cannot do well without
  • Engine VS Machine
  • Simplifying technology
  • Uncomplicated training
  • Stop hacking
  • How marketing ruins your nutrition
  • Fat Adapted or not fat adapted
  • The search for simplicity

Getting the balance of training and recovery is more art than science sometimes, and can be a complicated process. In the post-Kona whitewash, we have seen quite a few top athletes who (through their own admissions) just didn't get that right on the lead up to the race. We believe this is also a big issue for Age Group triathletes, so today we break down that intricate balance of knowing when enough is enough.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Getting the balance right.
  • Training consistency.
  • Recovery consistency.
  • Getting the execution right.
  • Heading the warning signs.
  • The bigger picture; the macro VS the micro.
  • Art and science of recovery
  • Desire/ drive VS intuition and clarity.
  • Weak desire = weak result.
  • Self reflection and self awareness.
  • When is enough really enough.
  • Doing things you don't want to do.

Ahhh Kona. Such a beautiful location that can deliver both pain and glory. This year was no different with plenty of drama and action unfolding throughout the day followed by plenty of celebrations (and possibly some disappointment). Rather than tell you about the winners of the race (you already know that) today we discuss some valuable lessons from the race on the big island, and how you can apply these in your next race.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Strengths VS Weaknesses
  • Staying cool
  • Training and preparation
  • Backing yourself
  • Understanding when to push
  • Course knowledge
  • Reverting to your trained state

Today we are talking all things NOISE. Let's be clear, we love this sport and we love the knowledge and passion that is shared throughout the triathlon community. But too much noise leads to distraction, and distraction leads to inconsistency. And of course inconsistency is what stops people from achieving great things in sport. So settle in as we talk about how to manage the noise and help you find some clarity.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The noise of Kona
  • Processing information
  • How the noise affects outcomes
  • What you really need
  • "Talk less, ride more"
  • Following the path
  • Internal and external noise
  • Training yourself to believe
  • Setting your reality

Today Pete and I catch up and discuss my Ironman comeback. My last Ironman race was back in Kona in 2009. I attempted Ironman Melbourne in 2013 and I believe that was the day when I switched my celiac gene on and maybe my prior pre race dinner of pizza and beer pushed me over the edge. That day my stomach and diaphragm shut down before exiting the shortened swim (due to adverse conditions) and my day was done 90km into the bike. That led to a roller coaster of a year that ended up with adrenal dysfunction. Ironman Canada wasn't without it's challenges and race day mishaps but I'm happy to be back racing, health and resilient. Looking forward to more racing.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The 3 F’s

  • Conquering Fears
  •
Nutritional mistakes in racing

  • Racing with ego

  • The “what if” attitude
  •
Pulling apart the race

  • Dealing with pre-race stressors
  •
How to respond to stress
  •
Patience in racing

  • When things go wrong
  • Controlling the controllables

  • Wanting to be better each time
  •
Sustaining the hurt
  •
Pacing before racing

Pete and I have been talking recently about ways we have sabotaged ourselves, our fitness, our health and our triathlon results and we see athletes making some of these mistakes repeatedly. Now we don’t cover everything because much of it we have covered in previous podcasts with ourselves and other guest experts and pro athletes + many topics are covered in our Bottlenecks project. This one is pretty short and sweet but will give you a number of things to think about and maybe change.

Enjoy!

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Reverting to sub-optimal habits in race week or on race day.
  • Big mistakes when it comes to your bike.
  • The details.
  • Paying attention (or not) to the internal dashboard.
  • Learning.

Enjoy.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The Why
  • How the SBR will be the Easy part
  • The importance of the team
  • The crazy logistics
  • The training involved
  • Preparing for the mental challenges
  • His fuelling ... Not our way ;)

Today we have Dr Kevin Maggs of Running Reform on The Fat Black podcast. Kevin has studied Kinesiology and Chiropractic and was brought on by Rev3 triathlon to be their ART (Active Release Technique director). Kevin created one of/if not the best video education on prescribing running shoes (link below) and started Running Reform after continually hearing the same thing over and over from both pro and age group athletes. Their pain goes away with rest but always comes back with re-introduction of training and this will always be the case when biomechanics aren’t addressed. Today we address that topic and many others.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • What is the right shoe for you?
  • What is relevant when choosing shoes.
  • The factors that go into injuries.
  • What can influence your technique.
  • Gait re-education.
  • The 3 aspects of biomechanics.
  • How to change your cadence.
  • Fatigue and biomechanics.
  • Questions you need to be asking your practitioner.
  • Respecting your injury.
  • The problem with orthotics.
  • Barefoot running.

Today is all about value. The value you place in not only your goals and ambitions, but the value place in the process to get there. We live in the era of “now” - everyone wants  something now(!) and most of the time they want to do it for “free” - not always in the monetary sense, but in the form of minimal commitment.

This is a demanding and sport and you have to be prepared to commit.

We also spend time breaking down the components of Todd Herman’s episode from last week - so go back and listen to that first if you haven’t already.

In today’s episode we discuss:

  • Why investing in your performance is important
  • Learning to invest in yourself, the right way
  • Why free = zero value to you
  • What free is going to cost you in the long run
  • The dangers of an exit strategy
  • The truth
  • Making the right decisions
  • Amateurs thinking like professionals
  • Asking yourself the right questions
  • Using mindset to shape your lens

Welcome to 2016! This is going to be an amazing year! And we start it off with a bang today!

Today we speak with Bob Murray from Flex Pharma on an extremely important issue: Cramping. Everyone knows that cramping sucks. We get them racing , we get them training, we get them lying in bed at night. And until now, there have only been anecdotal solutions to manage your cramping. Both of us have had success with magnesium, to an extent, but we couldn't find an answer as to why.... Bob is here to tell us about a new sports drink that is going to change how we deal with cramps - forever. This isn't a marketing pitch - this is getting into the science of cramping and helping you understand and manage your cramps.

In today's episode we discuss:

  • A story of two sea-kayaking neuroscientists and how they cracked the code
  • Why we cramp
  • Different types of cramps
  • What we know and don't know about cramping
  • Cramp triggers
  • How "It's the Nerve" works
  • Getting spicy
  • Mouth --> Brain --> Muscle
  • Mouth rinsing
  • Making your neuromuscular system more awesome
  • It's the Nerve and performance

I should have dropped the f-bomb in the title. It would have more impact.

Seriously. Why are athletes wanting things easy? Race after race we hear how tough it was like the toughness of doing an Ironman was not expected.

I don't get it. A big reason we sign up for these events is because we are looking for a challenge. We are seeing (even if we are only aiming to finish and don't care what time it is, other than it being under cut off) if we have what it takes. What we have deep within ourselves when the going gets tough.

Yet that goes out the window when it does get tough ... And athletes are wishing it was easier.

Yeah it was choppy, yeah it was windy .. Yeah it was .... But some athletes still went fast and many of them don't have anything you don't.

Pete and I talk IMWA, why athletes need to get real, use the power of negative preparation and we talk about the absurdity of 70 athletes not finishing the swim. I also give some accountability home work at the end. To do one thing... Make you a better athlete.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Strategy, preparation, execution.
  • Luke Mckenzie is a badass.
  • Giving in.
  • Disrespect.
  • The swim and how NOT to be one of those 70 that didn't finish.
  • Why it shouldn't be easy.
  • What you need to do now if you did race.
  • What you need to do if swimming isn't a strong point.
