The Endurance Specific Podcast

This week I get to virtually sit down with John Kelly. The 15th finisher at the Barkley Marathon - which has been going for way more years than finishers of the event. It’s really the end point of ultra running. If you haven’t watched the Netflix doco do it.

John is a husband and in his words to an incredible wife, the proud father of 3 kids under the age of 3 (the latest addition are twins) - he works as a data scientist in a start up in Washington DC and he runs, bikes, hikes to support his ability to do his job with a clear mind. And he does swim but only because he likes to race and challenge himself in triathlons.

John is racing Kona this year and after his recent Barkley success and the amount of interviews his had.. I did not want this to be another same same interview focusing on the Barkley. No, I wanted to dig deeper and have a conversation around making it work with a very young family (shows how real communication allows it to work), and how he uses his commute to do hie training. How he got the necessary elevation training done in an essentially flat area, his training, the mental differences between ultra running and racing Ironman and some really great stuff on goals.

I really enjoyed this conversation and there are many take home points that if implemented will not only help bring out the best versions of ourselves but make us better athletes.

Ok lets get into it.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- The benefit of adapting your goals in the race
- Developing the confidence to keep pushing when things go south
- Lessons of self
- The 3 priorities when setting goals
- Getting it done in a time compressed environment
- The mental differences between Ironman racing and ultra running
- The performance benefits on hiking
- The training
- Believing it's possible, even at a stretch
- Failures
- And more

This week I get to have a super fun conversation with multiple Xterra and Off Road World Champion Lesley Paterson. Lesley's story is an  inspirational one from early success to quickly becoming disillusioned with the sport when sports scientist tried to bake her in the 'one size fits all' performance mould. After bunch of years off she got reacquainted to getting muddy (past rugby days... yes you read that right) and chiseled herself to become an Xterra World Champion. Throw in Lyme disease into the mix, learning to deal with negative Nora and all the other mental conundrums that we athletes face on a daily basis... mix in her sports psychologist hubby Simon and very soon you to can have an exceptional book in your hands that could be life changing for you.

Reading it won't do that... rolling up your sleeves and creating awareness of your inner self  and doing the exercise contained within will help. The book is hilarious and super practical. And with a title "The Brave Athlete - Calm the Fuck Down and Rise to the Occasion" how can it not be a winner.

Lesley is the real deal. The Scottish lass doesn’t mind dropping an f-bomb to two and is just passionate about helping others rise to the occasion.

I thoroughly enjoyed my chat with her and I know you will too.

LET’s do it.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The story
  • Not fitting the mould
  • Overcoming the hurdles
  • The gradual process
  • The Why
  • Asking Why! Be a 3 year old.
  • Our existential crisis
  • Why not giving a shit can be the catalyst to your best ever results
  • The need and the reason for gratitude
  • Our 3 brains
  • Lesley's alter ego and why it's needed
  • The single most important psychological trail we need.

This week I get to welcome back Rachel Joyce aka the Joycenator back on to the Fat Black podcast. We had Rachel on way back for episode #146 where she gave us a lot of insights and clues into what it is to be a champion athlete and how we can all take on the traits of champions to bring out our best selves. Well today we kind of continue that thread but in the new light of Rachel being a mum to 7 month old Archie and coming back to racing. Recently Rachel lined up a Oceanside 70.3 as her first race back (her race choice speaks volumes about her and choosing a race with with a stacked field). You will most definitely hear little Archie throughout the interview because he decided being awake listening to mum speak was way more exciting than sleeping.
Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- Making it work
- Making peace with her past achievements
- The decision to come back to racing
- The balancing act
- Choosing the tough races
- When the TrainingPeaks box goes RED.
- The value of benchmarks
- The enjoyment of the puzzle
- And much more.

This week it's my absolute pleasure to sit down with my better half Charlotte Paul. Ironman champ and super mum, talking all about her time as a triathlete. From age grouper to professional and it being the vehicle where she went from a life of no direction to one of finding purpose and self belief. It was fun going into the memory archives, having a fun conversation and give you many take homes to improve you as an athlete and person.

I trust you'll enjoy this as much as we did recording it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why you need to be patient
  • Finding purpose and belief
  • Preparing to win
  • The hated session that improved an already fast run
  • At the end of the day... What really matters
  • Mental toughness
  • Pacing
  • Race week mishaps and how we sabotage ourselves
  • The road to success
  • And much more.
