The Endurance Specific Podcast

Today we have serial Fat Black podcast guest Steph Lowe on and we have a chat about so many things nutrition. As per usual, there are a few rants - of course there are! But it's purely because we care and want to stop the self-imposed pain...

Always a pleasure chatting with Steph and I am excited to see her new program, LCHF Endurance... Make sure you check out her LCHF Endurance FB account (below) and for those non-Vegans, the Chicken abundance bowl looks fab. If you're vegan, simply sub the chicken out.

I trust you’ll enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Why the macro number is not set in stone
  • Being SMARTER about what you're doing
  • Macros and what they look like
  • Vegan LCHF
  • Why you should test your gut (or your poo) before bloods
  • Fruits... They fit in with JERF
  • Falling in love with the process
  • Why a percentage is better than a number
  • The NCHF mistake (made worse by doing NCLF)
  • Intelligent fuelling
  • Why you don't need to start the LCHF journey with macros
  • And so much more

Today I have Jocelyn McCauley on the show. I met Jocelyn McCauley at the daylight mind cafe in Kona this year and we tried to get a podcast done in the craziness of race week. It didn’t happen, but we finally got there.

Jocelyn started the sport of swim bike run in 2013, in fact, she registered for her first 70.3 and shortly after found out she was pregnant. Well, she trained as much as she could and 11 weeks after the birth of her daughter she completed Muncie 70.3 in under 5 hours!

She went on to do her first Ironman and qualified for Kona. And in her second IM, she added IM World Champion to her name and first amateur female. Her first IM pro win was Mallorca in 2016 and then she won IMNZ in 2017 and ran a smoking 2:59. 10 in Kona this past October … This mum is the real deal and we speak about her trajectory and her lessons as a 2nd year pro. Many of these lessons we should heed.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did interviewing Jocelyn.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

- Self identity
- Pro and AG - it's a different race
- Logistics of racing with a 3-month-old
- Her trajectory in the sport and how athletic background matters
- Fitting it all in being a mother and wife
- Visualizing
- Making it and keeping it fun
- Her Jekyll and Hyde personality
- Breaking down her Kona race
- The 10 things she learned as a 2nd-year pro
- And so much more

Today I have Simon Whitfield on the Fat Black. Simon shouldn’t need any introduction, however… For those that don’t know. Simon won the first Olympic gold in Sydney 2000 and in this interview he tells how he believes he got a leg up on every other competitor well before the course was even set. He won that event after going down on the bike with 14 others and worked his way back. I remember sitting in the stands with Charlotte watching that live and thinking damn near 2 hours is a long time to be racing. Who would’ve known some 17 years later I'd be having a conversation with Simon. Ahh, the poetry of life.

Simon also won silver in Beijing a gold at the 2002 Commonwealth games among so many other medals was know for having a great kick in the finish straight. One of my favorite ever finishing pictures is the one above by the legend that is Dely Carr of Simon outsprinting Brad Kahlefeldt, Jan Frodeno and Kris Gemmell to the line at the Hyvee race for $200K… Absolutely Rivetting.

I really enjoyed my chat with Simon and especially why having and cultivating your imagination is so important.

Anyway, I’ll leave it at that so you can fully enjoy. There's some big life lessons in here.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • How Simon orchestrated his gold medal in Sydney
  • Chasing the ball and how it helps you find that little bit more
  • The connection of fiction with champions and why fiction is so important
  • Daily rituals and why you need to be disciplined with them
  • Why cultivating your imagination is so crucial to everything
  • Deliberate orchestration of that you wish to attain
  • Performance decision making
  • Losing self-authority of our attention span
  • What’s occupying your mental landscape
  • The overwhelming characteristics of champions like the Brownlee brothers, Daniela Ryf, Jan Frodeno, Chrissie Wellington, Nicole Spirig
  • Why maintaining your breath is everything
  • Creating and cultivating your environment to success
  • Keeping it simple
  • State story strategy
  • The benefits of a systematic process
  • On navigating an about end to a triathlon career
  • The butterfly story
  • The best response from Simon’s dad after he came second to Jan in Beijing
  • The importance of play
  • Nutrition
  • N+1 training
  • Biggest mistake athletes make in quest for performance
