The Endurance Specific Podcast

Conformational bias…

We all have it or have had it… I’m for one sick of it and want to be more pragmatic about it all.

But I still find myself getting angry because of it. Even with people who I know have others best interest at heart. I’ve been guilty of this, and I believe we've lost the forest for the trees!

This is a short podcast on confirmation bias and some strategies I believe will help you have better health and performance. I have the good doctor, Dr Phil Maffetone coming back on the show so we can dissect all these nutritional bias's and give you a simple path to better health and performance.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, I DISCUSS:

  • Confirmation bias
  • What simple effective day to day nutrition looks like
  • Does nutritional ketosis have a time and place?
  • Benefits of metabolic flexibility
  • Our obsession with health is making us unhealthy

The below are IF you want to look into nutritional ketosis more. I don't believe you need to go "keto" as an endurance athlete. I do believe it has a time and place, but it is not a requirement unless you have some untoward things going on (metabolic disease, cancer, pre-diabetes, type II). But if you need education, Dominic D' Agostino is your man.

I still remember the first time I 'met' Rich,  it was during the marathon at Ironman WA in 2007 when I broke 9 hours for the first time. Early on were running together, and he had one of those back then new fandangal Garmin watches that told your pace.

I still had the good ole trustworthy Timex 100 lap stopwatch. I remember asking him what pace we were running.

The answer: Too Fast. Haha.

This was off the back of when Rich won his age group in Kona and I’ve seen him take on a pro card, helped coached him for a bit, go through the ups and downs and seen him change his career to something he is way more passionate about and inevitably reducing his earnings but on the flip side enjoying his life with his family way more.

Last year Rich won Ultraman Australia and posted the fastest Ultraman overall time in the world.  It’s not an ‘easy’ course even though any Ultraman is not going to be easy. But this course is spicy. I know.

So we talk some on Ultraman, we talk some coaching, we break stuff down and his answers to the final questions are the goods.

Enjoy my conversation with Rich Thompson

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • Is Ultraman then next step?
  • Do you need to train more volume than IM
  • Breaking down Rich’s worlds fastest Ultraman time
  • How the team matters (this is recurring!)
  • Racing strategies and adapting the plan on the go
  • The primary driver to get you to the finish line the fastest
  • The mental games
  • The athlete you have to become
  • All goals matter
  • Getting the most out of yourself
  • On losing what you objectives ought to be in training and racing
  • How life circumstances matter and being ok with them
  • And so much more

Today I have Dr Emily Splichal on the podcast. I was introduced to Dr Emily by a good friend of mine who used to head up Trigger Point in NZ and I knew as soon as her website loaded, I needed to have her on the podcast.

This quote by Leonardo Di Vinci "THE HUMAN FOOT IS A MASTERPIECE OF ENGINEERING AND A WORK OF ART" and then her intro paragraph on us holding the power to our own health and well-being and that we need to take ownership and commit to the plans and necessary steps needed to improve our lives. Boom.

This conversation really follows on from my one with Jay Dicharry on Running Rewired. There is simply stuff we need to do if we want to not only keep playing (our sports) but playing for the long term. Movement is freedom folks and to have freedom we need to move.

Ok without further ado.

Enjoy my conversation from a couple of weeks ago with Dr Emily Splichal

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • There is no magical quick fix
  • Dual tasking and cognitive challenges for optimal recovery
  • All the things you NEED to do to get better
  • The exploration of movement and why its needed to avoid injury
  • Life is sensory
  • Why you need belief in what you are doing
  • The power of the mental aspect in health and performance
  • Whats important
  • Over optimizing stimulation
  • Naboso innersoles for proprioception and sensory stimulation
  • Move Please MOVE
  • Optimizing the full puzzle
  • Why you need barefoot stimulation
  • The power of intention
  • Just getting out the door without activation hurts you success
  • Focus on SELF
  • Emily’s best advice
  • And so much more

Wow the 250th episode… and it’s one that can definitely help your performances. The unfortunate truth is we all get niggles and injuries that aren’t fun. They kill consistency (which kills performance) and they can cause a helluva lot of frustration which is a massive killjoy.

The problem with running is we just go out and do it. No though other than one foot in front of the other. But where are we starting from? Do we wave muscles that are unplugged? What sort of movement blocks do we have?

Well, Jay Dicharry, one of America’s leading physical therapists is the man that elites go to because of his success with diagnosing and rebuilding injured endurance athletes.

He has been able to blend the fields of clinical practice and engineering to better understand and eliminate the cause of overuse injuries in endurance athletes. His unique approach works outside of the traditional model of therapy to correct imbalances before they affect performance.

Enjoy my conversation with Jay Dicharry.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The cadence myth
  • Move better before running better
  • Mobility and Stability
  • Fixing blocked areas
  • Unplugged Muscles
  • Neural plasticity
  • Everyone lands in front of COG
  • Deliberate practice
  • Precision movements
  • Fitting in the rewiring and performance sessions into your weekly schedule
  • Software v hardware problems and knowing whats what.
  • Being honest where you are
  • The chassis is important too
  • Cross training versus complementary training
  • Defining posture
  • Finding your balance point
  • Does it matter where you land
  • And so much more.

Ritch Viola is the founder of Every Man Jack, a company that produces a complete line of grooming products for men. In his short 10 odd years as an age group athlete he has been able to accomplish so much, like winning his AG in Kona and 70.3 worlds in the same year but also crush it as a businessman (he gives us some great pointers), husband, dad and for those racing in North America, you have likely seen very fast age groupers in the EMJ kits.

Ritch formed his own team in 2011 to help promote his business, but discovered so much more about how he could contribute to the triathlon community. Team Every Man Jack has grown into one of the most recognizable outfits in the sport and currently boasts a roster of 75 athletes.

I wanted Ritch on because he is just that. A very busy man that gets it done. He has been deliberate about setting up his life - something we go into.

Lots of goodies in this conversation. And …. Ritch has been kind enough to set us up with a 25% discount over at everymanjack.com. This offer is only good to Feb 16th - so get in on some excellent products that care about you and nature.

I love seeing products that don’t have the crap in them. So boys get yourself some goods or ladies buy your man some. Use the coupon code TRISPECIFIC and get 25% off (excludes Truckers and accessories)

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • That Kona swim start
  • The roll on effect of that first committed decision
  • Knowing thyself is very important
  • The benefits of being overcommitted
  • A typical day in the life
  • 3 key attributes to Ritch’s success
  • Staying in the moments
  • The biggest challenge in racing
  • Losing Meredith
  • What Ritch does when unmotivated or overwhelmed
  • Setting realistic goals
  • Your path
  • Team EMJ
  • And so much more.

Ok this week I was meant to bring you my conversations with a successful entrepreneur, businessman, AG Ironman and 70.3 World champion but we had some connectivity challenges. The editing just wasn’t going to cut it so we have rescheduled that for next week.

So… You have me again, maybe with a little ranting only done with love because I rather have all of us rise up, fight the good fight and achieve great things. So this one's an off the cuff episode of some of the things I see too much of (things that I’ve done) and things that just are screwing you over when it comes to bring out performances that are within you.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It's not about being smarter it's about making less stupid decisions
  • Common nutrition mistakes
  • Race pacing
  • Doing efforts correctly
  • On finding Mojo
  • Why the fight

Alrighty guys and girls. This week I'm talking about developing your mental strength.

We all know athletes that are tough as nails. No matter what a race throws at them they seemingly take it in their stride. While you may feel that when the going gets tough you don't seem to be able to rise to the occasion.

Well in todays episode, I cut to the chase and give you some in the trenches tools on how you can develop some GRIT to help you get to where you want to in this sport.

Lets do it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It is really simple
  • Making the right choices when it matters
  • Developing mental toughness from books
  • Excuses
  • Motivation
  • Why Repetition
  • A timely post from David Goggins

Ok, today I have a returning guest, the awesome Steph Corker.

Steph is championing women getting out there and kicking ass in what has been in the past a male-dominated world. Not just out on the race course but in boardrooms across the world.

Why is Steph awesome? She has an infectious attitude, is brave to get highly uncomfortable on a path to self-betterment but also to help inspire the females that follow. She also helped me out, really when I most needed it, on a run I definitely was not fit for. Yes, I can run long, but week out Ironman shape I was not. Good times. We cover a lot on today's conversation from equality to making the jump to pro, the fears of not belonging, obsession and more.

Sit back for the ride. Be inspired. Screw the naysayers and follow your heart.

Enjoy.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • The new pro Ironman rule changes
  • Theme songs (see below)
  • Being humbled
  • Imposter Syndrome
  • Making the jump
  • Obsession and the love of the moment
  • Clock lessons
  • Making and maintaining benchmarks
  • Consistency
  • Staying the course
  • Equality
  • Making the main thing the main thing
  • And more

Ok guys and girls… This week on the podcast I’m laying out some of the things that I did and continue to do that led me to going from an 11:27 to an 8:57 Ironman time. I asked the folks in the TS Cafe, if they just wanted interviews or also me speaking about my philosophies on training, racing, race execution, mental toughness and more so we can continue to give you strategies for success in your endurance endeavours.

Well the answers were clear, with many wanting some rants. And rants are just done with love, because I really just want to see you become better.

So here we go, with the first of 2018… Covering some topic areas of how I too a lot of time off of my Ironman PR and won my age group. These things still help me today and they will help you if and when applied with consistency.

Lets do it.

IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

  • It’s got to excite you

  • The love of the process

  • Attitude
  • Desire and intention
  • Commitment
  • Failure
  • Advice
  • Support
  • Embracing discomfort

At just $395 for the whole year (or $1.08/day), you’ll get access to our TS LIFE membership platform and community. You’ll fill in an athlete questionnaire regarding your goals, races, strength limiters and such and we will then use Training Peaks to set up your training so that it will lead you to those goals. You just need to show up, be consistent, follow the advice and I’ll bet that you’ll surprise yourself with what you can achieve.
